Account Recovery Depends on Reaching the Number — Keep It Reachable

The moment you forget a password, the account is only as recoverable as its phone number. If that number has been recycled or expired, the reset code lands nowhere and the account is effectively gone.
Recovery goes to the number
Password resets, login alerts, and identity checks are almost always sent by SMS to the registered number. Whoever controls that number controls recovery. This is true whether you signed up with a personal number or a rented one.
The failure mode
A rented number that expires is released. A one-time code number is recycled within minutes. Either way, later recovery codes land somewhere you cannot reach. The account still exists, but you cannot get back in.
Keep it reachable
Treat the number as part of the account.
- Track the expiry from the day you rent.
- Renew before it lapses if the account still matters.
- Keep the same number across verification, 2FA, and recovery.
- Do not let a one-time code be the number on an account you keep.
If it already expired
Options are limited. If the platform lets you change the number while logged in, do it immediately. If you are locked out, contact support, but expect a hard identity check. Prevention — renewing before expiry — is far easier.
Questions, answered
Why can I not recover my account?+
The reset code goes to the registered phone number. If that number was recycled or expired, the code lands somewhere you cannot reach.
How do I keep recovery working?+
Keep the number attached and renew it before expiry. Do not rely on a one-time code number for an account you keep.
Can I change the number?+
Usually yes while logged in. Change it to a number you control before you lose access.
Is a rented number fine for recovery?+
Yes, as long as you renew it. The key is that it stays attached and reachable for as long as the account matters.
