SMS-verification pricing is confusing because providers quote different things: one-time codes versus multi-day rentals, VoIP versus physical numbers, and "starting at" floors that no one actually gets. First: one-time codes vs rentals are different products
A one-time code is rented for minutes — you get one verification SMS and the number is recycled. A rental keeps a dedicated number for days or weeks, with unlimited SMS in the period. Providers mix these in their marketing, which is most of why price comparisons go wrong.
When a site says "numbers from $0.05," that is almost always a one-time code on a cheap pool, not a 30-day rental. For any account you intend to keep, you are shopping for rentals.

What the numbers actually tell you
For one-time codes, the spread is wide — Google US runs from about $0.06 to $0.90 depending on the provider and pool. That spread is mostly pool quality and margin, not a difference in what you receive: one SMS.
For rentals the market is thin. Most providers do not offer a true 30-day rental at all; the ones that do price it far above the one-time equivalent. If you need a number to stay reachable, you are comparing a small number of real options.
The real cost is not the sticker
A quoted price only matters if the code actually arrives. Delivery success on verification pools is commonly reported in the 55-90% range, which means the effective price is the sticker divided by the success rate. A $0.10 number that delivers half the time costs $0.20 per successful verification.
